課程概述

All living creatures require some forms of energy to sustain life and reproduce. Besides the basic needs, human need additional energy to work, leisure, and other activities. As human population grows with the fast industrial development, secure and steady supply of energy resources become key factor in economic development. Currently the major portion of commercial energy depend on fossil fuels and nuclear. The quantities of these energy sources are of limited supplies.

Besides the problem with supply security, almost all major environmental problems can trace their origins to the uses of energy. According to estimates, there is no immediate threat of fossil scarcity, no immediate danger of having disastrous environmental impacts, more and more evidences indicate those are inevitable and will happen in our lifetime. This course means to provide students the fundamentals of energy systems, and their influences on the environment. Their relationships with economic trend and energy policy will be mentioned. 

課程目標
First part will introduce various energy resources and the corresponding technologies. It will cover the usual conversion of energy, the demand and trend for energy. The global perspectives will be discussed.

Second part will discuss the details of the commercial energy technology. Fossil fuel consumption and their environmental impacts will be studied first. Next we will discuss the technology of nuclear fission technology, the nuclear fuel cycle and its impact. The economics of electric power will be discussed.

The third unit will focus on the alternative energy. Potential alternative technologies are introduced, along with current limitations, and future perspectives.

The last unit will address the problem of energy use with climate change problem. The international responses to the global change issue, negotiations, policy measures will be discussed. Finally we will discuss Taiwan's response to the climate change issue.
